It is worth taking the time to reflect and meditate on Isaiah’s vision of the suffering servant of God in Isaiah 53. Here we will illuminate one statement using the Strong’s concordance but the whole chapter is a glorious vision of the gift that Jesus gave through His life and death on the Cross.
Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Isaiah 53:4a
- He has borne – from the Hebrew word Nasa or Nasah which means to lift, bear, carry or take.
- Our griefs – from the Hebrew word Choli meaning sickness, grief, malady anxiety, calamity.
- And carried – from the Hebrew word Sabal meaning to bear a heavy load (like oxen).
- Our sorrows – from the Hebrew word Makob meaning pain (both mental and physical), grief or sorrows.
Here we see the depth of His gift. He lifted and carried away our grief and sickness. And He took the heavy burden of all our pain, sadness and grief. We must remember that all this is yet to come into fulfillment when we see Him face to face. This journey to wholeness in Him is in progress. We can see that through the Cross He has made a way for us to unburden ourselves onto Him. We don’t need to carry our sorrows, pain and grief. He will carry them for us although they are heavy loads. What an amazing promise. Give them to Him. He loves you.
